Each luscious mozzarella stick is perfectly tucked inside a golden-brown wrapper, generously rolled in a seasoned panko breadcrumb and Parmesan cheese coating. It’s a fantastic twist on a classic snack, perfect for any occasion – from game day gatherings to a fun family treat.

Why This Crispy Wonton Mozzarella Stick Recipe Works
This recipe for homemade wonton cheese sticks is a total winner for several reasons. First, it simplifies the process of making delicious mozzarella sticks by using readily available ingredients: easy-to-handle egg roll or wonton wrappers and convenient string cheese. This innovative combination bypasses the fuss of traditional breading methods, making it quick and accessible for home cooks.
What truly sets these apart is the incredible texture. The wrappers, when fried, become wonderfully crisp and golden, creating a satisfying crackle with every bite. This is further enhanced by an optional but highly recommended coating of light, airy panko breadcrumbs and savory Parmesan cheese. The panko adds an extra layer of crunch, mimicking the best qualities of classic fried mozzarella sticks, while the Parmesan infuses a rich, salty depth of flavor into the exterior.
Inside, you’ll find a perfectly melted, gooey cheese center that stretches enticingly when pulled apart – the hallmark of a truly great cheese stick. The balance between the crispy exterior and the warm, stretchy interior is simply divine. Whether you’re whipping them up for a party appetizer, a quick snack, or a fun family dinner side, these wonton mozzarella sticks are guaranteed to be a hit. Serve them hot with your favorite marinara or a zesty pizza sauce, and watch them disappear!

Simple Ingredients for Delicious Wonton Cheese Sticks
Creating these delightful crispy cheese sticks requires just a handful of common ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your pantry or can easily find at any grocery store. The beauty of this recipe lies in its simplicity and the big flavor payoff it delivers with minimal effort. Here’s a quick overview of what you’ll need to gather:
- Mozzarella String Cheese Sticks: These are the star of the show, providing that quintessential gooey, melty center. Their convenient individual packaging makes them incredibly easy to work with.
- Egg Roll Wrappers: The secret to the incredible crispiness! Egg roll wrappers offer a sturdy yet thin layer that fries up perfectly golden and crunchy.
- Panko Breadcrumbs: For that extra layer of irresistible crunch. Panko is lighter and flakier than regular breadcrumbs, giving a superior crisp texture.
- Grated Parmesan Cheese: Adds a savory, umami kick to the breading, enhancing the overall flavor profile.
- Minced Fresh Parsley: Provides a touch of fresh herb flavor and a pop of color to the coating.
- Large Egg: Used to create an egg wash, which helps the panko and Parmesan adhere to the wrappers.
- Water: A little bit of water is used to thin the egg wash and also to help seal the egg roll wrappers.
- Cooking Oil for Frying: A neutral oil with a high smoke point, like vegetable, canola, or peanut oil, is essential for deep frying to achieve that perfect golden crisp.

Ingredient Info and Helpful Substitution Suggestions
Let’s dive deeper into the key ingredients and explore some alternatives to ensure your wonton cheese sticks are always a success, no matter what you have on hand.
WRAPPER Choices: While the recipe specifically calls for egg roll wrappers, you absolutely have options.
- Egg Roll Wrappers: These are generally larger and more robust, making them ideal for wrapping a full stick of string cheese. Our recipe uses wrappers wide enough to accommodate a whole stick and even allows you to cut the wrapper in half for two sticks per wrapper. If your wrappers are smaller, simply cut the string cheese in half before wrapping. This adaptability makes egg roll wrappers a popular choice for their ease of use and consistent results. They fry up beautifully crisp and golden.
- Wonton Wrappers: You can certainly use wonton wrappers, but be mindful of their size and thickness. Wonton wrappers are typically smaller and slightly thicker than egg roll wrappers. This means you’ll likely need to cut your string cheese into smaller pieces to fit, and they might require a minute or so longer in the fryer to achieve the same level of crispness and ensure the cheese is fully melted without burning the wrapper. The key is to keep an eye on them while frying.
COATING Variations: The panko breadcrumb and Parmesan coating adds an exceptional crunch and flavor, reminiscent of classic mozzarella sticks.
- Panko & Parmesan (Recommended): This combination delivers a superior crispiness that truly elevates these cheese sticks. Panko breadcrumbs are famous for their light, airy texture, which results in a wonderfully crunchy crust. The grated Parmesan adds a salty, nutty flavor that complements the mozzarella beautifully. Fresh parsley also brings a vibrant herbaceous note and visual appeal.
- Plain Wrapper (Optional): If you prefer a simpler, more delicate crunch, you can easily omit the panko and Parmesan coating. The wonton or egg roll wrappers themselves will still crisp up wonderfully when fried, offering a slightly different but equally delicious texture. This is a great option if you’re short on time or ingredients, or if you want the pure taste of the wrapper and cheese to shine.
- Other Breadcrumbs: If you don’t have panko, traditional fine breadcrumbs can be used, though the texture might be slightly less airy. For an extra flavorful kick, consider seasoned breadcrumbs.
- Spice it Up: Feel free to add a pinch of garlic powder, onion powder, or a dash of paprika to your panko mixture for an extra layer of flavor.
Cheese Substitutions: While mozzarella string cheese is classic for its melt and stretch, you can experiment with other firm, good-melting cheeses cut into stick shapes, such as cheddar, Monterey Jack, or even a blend of cheeses. Just ensure they are firm enough to hold their shape during wrapping.

Making these crispy wonton mozzarella sticks is a straightforward process that yields incredibly delicious results. Follow these simple steps for appetizer perfection:
- Prepare the Breading Mixture: In a medium-sized bowl, combine the panko bread crumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, and minced fresh parsley. Stir them together until well mixed. Then, spread this aromatic mixture evenly onto a plate or a shallow dish, ready for coating the cheese sticks. This ensures an even and flavorful crust.
- Prepare the Egg Wash: Using the same bowl (no need to clean it, as it will be used for the same process), whisk together the large egg and 1 tablespoon of water. This creates a sticky mixture that will help the breading adhere to the wrappers, ensuring a perfect crust.
- Prepare the Wrappers: Take each egg roll wrapper and carefully cut it in half. This creates smaller, more manageable pieces perfect for wrapping individual string cheese sticks.
- Heat the Oil: In a deep-sided skillet or a large pot, add enough cooking oil to reach about 2 inches up the sides. Place it over medium-high heat. It’s crucial to preheat the oil to the correct temperature; use an instant-read thermometer to ensure it reaches 325°F (160°C). Maintaining the right oil temperature is key to achieving a crispy exterior and preventing the cheese from exploding or the sticks from becoming greasy.
- Wrap the Cheese Sticks: While the oil is heating, begin wrapping your cheese. Lay one egg roll wrapper half flat. Place a mozzarella cheese stick near one edge. Roll it up about halfway, then tuck both open side ends inward, similar to folding a burrito. Dip your finger into the remaining water and lightly moisten the edges of the wrapper. Continue rolling tightly and gently press the wet edges to seal the wrapper completely. This prevents the cheese from oozing out during frying. Repeat this process for all remaining cheese sticks.
- Coat the Wrapped Sticks: Dip each wrapped cheese stick into the prepared egg wash, making sure all sides are thoroughly coated. Next, roll the egg-washed stick in the panko and Parmesan mixture. Gently press the crumbs onto the wrapper to ensure they adhere well. Once coated, place the breaded stick onto a wire rack. Continue this breading process for all the remaining cheese sticks.
- Fry to Golden Perfection: Once the oil is at temperature, carefully add the breaded cheese sticks to the hot oil using tongs. Do not overcrowd the pan; fry in batches if necessary to maintain oil temperature. Let them cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes on one side until golden brown. Then, gently turn them over and cook for an additional 2 minutes, or until both sides are beautifully golden and crispy.
- Serve Immediately: Once cooked, remove the wonton cheese sticks to a clean wire rack set over paper towels to drain any excess oil. Serve them piping hot and enjoy that incredible melty cheese and crispy wrapper. These are best enjoyed fresh from the fryer! Pair them with our homemade pizza sauce, classic marinara, or a creamy ranch dip.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Perfect Wonton Cheese Sticks
Here are some common questions and professional advice to help you master these delightful wonton cheese sticks and ensure they turn out perfect every time.
While you technically can use either, we highly recommend egg roll wrappers for this recipe. Egg roll wrappers are typically larger and a bit more forgiving to work with, allowing you to easily wrap a full stick of string cheese. Wonton wrappers are smaller and thicker, which means you might need to cut your cheese sticks in half and may require a slightly longer frying time to achieve the same golden crispness and ensure the cheese is fully melted. For consistent results and ease of wrapping, egg roll wrappers are our preferred choice.
Absolutely! In fact, using a deep fryer is the superior method if you have one. A dedicated deep fryer maintains a consistent oil temperature much more effectively than a skillet on a stovetop. This consistency is crucial for achieving evenly golden and crispy results without the sticks becoming overly greasy or unevenly cooked. If you’re looking for professional-quality fried appetizers, a deep fryer is a fantastic investment.
Yes, you can! While deep frying provides the crispiest results, baking or air frying offers a lighter alternative.
- For Air Frying: Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the breaded cheese sticks with cooking spray. Air fry in a single layer for 5-8 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. Cooking times may vary depending on your air fryer model.
- For Baking: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the breaded cheese sticks on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Lightly spray with cooking spray. Bake for 10-15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and the cheese is melted. While they won’t be as intensely crispy as deep-fried versions, they will still be delicious!
Yes, you can! This is a great meal prep tip. After you’ve wrapped and breaded the cheese sticks, place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure they don’t touch. Freeze them until solid (about 1-2 hours). Once frozen, transfer them to an airtight freezer bag or container. They can be stored in the freezer for up to 1-2 months. When ready to cook, deep fry directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time, or follow the air frying/baking instructions for frozen items (which usually require a slightly lower temperature and longer cooking time). This prevents the cheese from leaking out too quickly.
Proper sealing of the wrappers is crucial. Ensure you tuck both side ends inward tightly before fully rolling, and use a finger dipped in water to create a strong seal along all edges of the wrapper. Also, do not overcrowd the frying pan, as this can lower the oil temperature and lead to uneven cooking and potential leaks. Frying at the correct temperature (325°F / 160°C) also helps create a quick seal on the wrapper before the cheese has a chance to fully melt and escape.

Delicious Serving Suggestions for Wonton Cheese Sticks
These crispy wonton cheese sticks are fantastic on their own, but pairing them with the right dips and accompaniments can elevate them to an even more memorable appetizer experience. Here are some of our favorite ways to serve them:
- Classic Dips: The most popular choices include our rich homemade pizza sauce or a traditional marinara sauce. The tangy tomato base perfectly cuts through the richness of the cheese. For a creamy alternative, a cool and zesty ranch dressing is always a crowd-pleaser.
- Spicy Kick: If you love a bit of heat, try dipping them in a sriracha mayo, a sweet chili sauce, or a spicy jalapeño ranch.
- Herbaceous Touch: A pesto aioli or a fresh basil dipping sauce can add an elegant, aromatic twist.
- Creative Variations:
- Pepperoni Perfection: For a “pizza roll” vibe, simply roll a slice of pepperoni around the string cheese stick before wrapping it in the wonton or egg roll wrapper. This adds a delicious savory, slightly spicy note and an extra layer of flavor.
- Italian Herbs: Mix a teaspoon of Italian seasoning into your panko and Parmesan coating for a more pronounced herb flavor.
- Garlic Butter Brush: After frying, lightly brush the hot cheese sticks with melted garlic butter for an extra indulgent touch.
- As Part of a Platter: Serve them alongside other beloved finger foods like mini spring rolls, chicken wings, or jalapeño poppers for an impressive appetizer spread.
Remember, these are best enjoyed fresh and warm from the fryer when the cheese is at its peak meltiness and the wrapper is exquisitely crispy!

- 1 large egg
- ¼ cup water divided
Things You’ll Need
- Large deep sided skillet or deep fryer

- Wire cooling rack
Before You Begin
- Egg roll wrappers vary in size. The wrappers we used were wide enough to accommodate a whole stick of string cheese and big enough to roll two each.
- Wonton wrappers are thicker than egg roll wrappers so they may take a tad longer in the oil to fry. We chose to use egg roll wrappers for this recipe because they are normally larger than wonton, making it easier to cover the whole cheese stick.
- A deep fryer holds the temperature far more consistently than a skillet. So if you have a deep fryer we highly recommend that method.
- Serve the wonton cheese sticks warm from the fryer with our homemade pizza sauce, marinara, or ranch.
- To switch it up a little, roll a slice of pepperoni around the cheese stick before rolling in the egg roll/wonton wrapper.
Instructions
- In a medium bowl, combine panko bread crumbs, grated parmesan cheese, and parsley. Spread mixture onto a plate.
- Using the same (now empty) bowl, whisk the egg and 1 tablespoon of the water together.
- Cut each egg roll wrapper in half.
- Add enough oil in a deep sided skillet to come about 2-inches up the sides. Preheat over medium-high heat until instant read thermometer reaches 325 F.
- While oil is preheating, place a cheese stick onto one of the egg roll wrapper halves. Roll up halfway, tuck both open ends inward. Dip your finger into the water and run it along the edges of the egg roll wrapper. Continue rolling and gently press the wet end to help seal it. Repeat for all cheese sticks.
- Roll wrapped cheese stick in the egg wash, ensuring all sides are coated. Roll egg washed stick in panko mixture until coated, gently pressing to adhere the crumbs. Move breaded stick to a wire rack and continue with the remaining sticks.
- Using tongs, add breaded sticks to the hot oil and allow to cook undisturbed for 2-3 minutes. Turn sticks over and cook an additional 2 minutes, or until golden brown on both sides.
- Remove to a wire rack and serve warm.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
