The Beloved Chocolate Lasagna: A Dessert for Every Occasion
I’ve always been a tremendous admirer of the traditional chocolate lasagna. You know the one – that delightful, layered dessert also known as chocolate lush, Oreo delight, or simply dessert lasagna. In my family, we often prepare a vanilla pudding version affectionately dubbed Oreo Cake. No matter what name it goes by, this no-bake, layered pudding dessert is consistently a showstopper!
The classic chocolate rendition typically features a crunchy Oreo cookie crust as its base, followed by a smooth layer of sweetened cream cheese, then a generous spread of rich chocolate pudding, and finally crowned with a fluffy whipped topping. This dessert strikes the perfect balance: it’s effortlessly easy enough to whip up for a casual family dinner, yet special and elegant enough to grace the table at parties and grand celebrations. It’s one of those magical desserts that invariably vanishes quickly at potlucks, leaving everyone asking for the recipe.
Transforming the Classic into a Stunning Chocolate Lasagna Trifle
With this Chocolate Lasagna Trifle, I’ve taken that beloved dessert and elevated it into an extra-special, visually captivating treat without requiring any additional effort. The beauty of a trifle lies in its presentation: each delicious layer is showcased through the clear glass of a trifle bowl, creating an edible work of art. I absolutely adore serving a dessert that’s a true showstopper, one that easily outshines even the most impressive main courses, like a crispy roasted pork shoulder. This layered Oreo and chocolate pudding trifle is precisely that kind of dessert – it will have all your guests “oohing and ahhing,” making it especially perfect as we head into the holiday season or any festive gathering.
Ingredients You Will Need for Your No-Bake Chocolate Oreo Trifle:
- 1 package (family size 19.1 oz) Oreo cookies
- 1 package (8 oz) cream cheese, softened
- 1 tub (8 oz) thawed whipped topping, divided
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 4 1/4 cups milk, divided
- 2 boxes (3.4 oz each) instant chocolate pudding mix
Helpful Kitchen Tools for Assembling Your Trifle:
- Trifle bowl: Essential for showcasing those beautiful layers, though any large glass bowl will do.
- Electric mixer: Makes quick work of smoothing the cream cheese layer.
- Mixing bowls: You’ll need a few to prepare the separate components.
- Measuring cup: For accurate liquid measurements.
How to Assemble Your No-Bake Chocolate Lasagna Trifle:
To begin assembling this luscious trifle, start with the star of the show: the Oreo cookies. You’ll need one large family-sized package (19.1 oz), which typically contains about 48 cookies, or simply grab two smaller packages to reach the desired quantity. Set aside about 5 whole Oreos for a beautiful garnish later. For the remaining cookies, you have a couple of options for crushing them. For a truly therapeutic experience, place them in a zip-top bag and give them a good whack with a rolling pin – it’s surprisingly satisfying! Alternatively, for a quicker and more uniform crush, use a food processor. The goal is bite-sized pieces, not a fine powder, to ensure that wonderful textural contrast in every spoonful.
Next, prepare the decadent chocolate layer. In a large mixing bowl, simply whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix together with the specified amount of milk. This mixture will begin to thicken on its own within a few minutes, creating a rich and creamy pudding that forms the heart of your trifle. A crucial tip here: always ensure you are using instant pudding mix, and not the “cook & serve” variety, as the latter requires heat and won’t set properly in this no-bake recipe.
Now for the creamy, dreamy element. In either a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment or with an electric hand mixer, beat the softened cream cheese until it is perfectly smooth and free of any lumps. Starting with well-softened cream cheese at room temperature is absolutely key for achieving this silky texture. Gradually beat in the 1/4 cup of milk and sugar until fully combined and creamy. Finally, gently fold in 2 cups of the thawed whipped topping, creating a light, airy, and sweet cream cheese mixture that contrasts beautifully with the chocolate.
Layering for Perfection:
Now comes the fun part: layering your ingredients until your trifle bowl is filled with delightful decadence! I highly recommend using a dedicated trifle bowl, as its clear glass design makes the finished dessert look truly stunning, allowing each distinct layer to be admired. However, if you don’t have one, a large glass mixing bowl or even a large glass punch bowl will work beautifully. Begin by spreading one-third of your crushed Oreos evenly across the bottom of the bowl. Follow this with one-third of the prepared chocolate pudding, then half of the cream cheese mixture. Repeat these layers: another third of Oreos, another third of pudding, and the remaining half of the cream cheese mixture. Finish the trifle with the last third of crushed Oreos and the final third of chocolate pudding. To top it all off, add a generous mound of the remaining whipped topping in the center, or for a more refined look, pipe elegant little dollops around the edge. Garnish with your reserved whole or crushed Oreos, or even some chocolate shavings, for an extra touch of visual appeal.
Tips for a Perfect Chocolate Lasagna Trifle:
- Chill Time is Key: While the active prep is quick, this no-bake trifle needs ample time in the refrigerator (at least 2-4 hours, preferably overnight) for the layers to set properly and for the flavors to meld beautifully. This is crucial for easy serving.
- Softened Cream Cheese: I can’t stress this enough – ensure your cream cheese is at room temperature. This is the secret to a smooth, lump-free cream cheese layer. Take it out of the fridge at least 30 minutes to an hour before you plan to start.
- Instant Pudding Only: As mentioned, only use instant pudding mix. The “cook & serve” variety requires a different preparation method and won’t thicken correctly for this recipe.
- Oreo Texture: For a varied texture, you can crush some Oreos more finely for a “crust-like” layer and leave some a bit chunkier for delightful bits throughout the trifle.
- Garnish creatively: Beyond whole Oreos, consider chocolate curls, a dusting of cocoa powder, mini chocolate chips, or even a drizzle of chocolate syrup for extra flair.
Serving and Storage:
This Chocolate Lasagna Trifle is always best served cold. Once assembled and chilled, it will hold well in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days, making it an excellent make-ahead dessert for parties or busy weeks. Simply cover the trifle bowl tightly with plastic wrap to keep it fresh and prevent it from absorbing any refrigerator odors. It also travels well, making it a fantastic choice for potlucks – just remember to keep it chilled until serving time!

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
