Beyond that, it’s a wonderful opportunity for family bonding, creating shared experiences and lasting memories that go far beyond the kitchen table.
You can customize these toasts endlessly! Ingredients You’ll Need for Paddington Bear Toast
Gathering your ingredients is the first step to any delightful culinary adventure. For our Paddington Bear toast, you’ll need a few simple items that are likely already in your pantry or easily found at your local grocery store. We’re focusing on fresh, colorful ingredients to make these toasts not only delicious but also visually appealing and nutritious.
- Bread of your choice: We recommend a sturdy slice of wheat bread, as it provides a good canvas for your bear’s face and holds up well to spreads and toppings. Any sliced bread will work!
- Nutella, peanut butter, and/or marmalade: These will form the base of your bear’s face. Marmalade is a classic Paddington choice, but feel free to let your child pick their favorite spread!
- Blueberries: Essential for those bright, inquisitive bear eyes and a sweet little nose. Choose blueberries of varying sizes if you want a larger one for the nose.
- Sliced bananas: These will become the bear’s adorable ears and the base for the nose.
- Red and blue fruit roll-ups (optional): For Paddington’s iconic red hat and blue collar. This is where the real fun comes in for making it specifically Paddington! Alternatively, for a healthier twist, you can use thinly sliced strawberries for the hat.
Helpful Kitchen Tools to Get Started
While this recipe is designed to be simple and require minimal equipment, having these basic kitchen tools on hand will make the process even smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your little helpers. Safety first, so always ensure an adult is supervising or handling sharp tools.
- Cutting board: A must-have for safely slicing bananas and fruit roll-ups.
- Butter knife: Perfect for spreading Nutella, peanut butter, or marmalade. Safe for kids to use with supervision.
- Slicing knife: An adult will use this for precise banana slices if needed, or if using strawberries for the hat.
- Toaster: To get that perfect golden crunch for your toast base.
How to Craft Your Adorable Paddington Bear Toast: Step-by-Step Guide
Ready to bring your Paddington Bear toast to life? Follow these easy steps, and don’t forget to involve your children in each stage where appropriate – it’s part of the fun!
- Prepare Your Fruit: Begin by carefully cutting your bananas into medium-thick slices. These will form the ears and the base of the nose. Next, sort through your blueberries. You’ll want two that are similar in size for the eyes, and if you wish, a slightly larger one for the nose to give it character!
- Toast and Spread: Pop your chosen bread into the toaster. Once it’s perfectly golden brown, immediately spread a generous layer of Nutella, peanut butter, or marmalade onto the warm toast. The warmth helps the spread melt slightly and adhere beautifully.
- Form the Face Base (Ears & Nose): If you’re making a general teddy bear toast, place two banana slices on the top corners of the toast to create the ears. However, if you’re going for the distinct Paddington look, you can skip the banana ears as his hat will cover that area. Then, place one banana slice in the middle of the toast, slightly below the top edge, to serve as the base for the nose.
- Attach the Nose: Take one of your chosen blueberries for the nose. Apply a tiny dollop of your spread (Nutella, peanut butter, or marmalade) to the back of the blueberry. This small trick helps the blueberry stick securely to the banana slice and prevents it from rolling off.
- Place the Eyes: Position two blueberries above the nose to create the eyes. You can place them as close or as far apart as you like to give your bear different expressions!
For an extra touch of Paddington charm, let’s add his famous hat and collar:
- Craft Paddington’s Hat: Unroll a red fruit roll-up and flatten it gently. With clean kitchen scissors (this step is for adults!), cut out a curved or crescent shape for the brim of Paddington’s hat, and a small square or oval for the top part. Carefully place these onto the top of your toast, just above the eyes.
HINT: For a healthier and equally fun alternative to store-bought fruit roll-ups, why not try our easy Homemade Fruit Roll-Up recipe? They’re delicious and simple to make!
- Create the Collar: Next, unroll a blue (or green, depending on your fruit roll-up colors) fruit roll-up. Again, an adult should use clean scissors to cut two small triangles. These will form Paddington’s distinctive jacket collar. Place them at the bottom of the toast, below the bear’s face, to complete his iconic look!
Enjoy Your Adorable Paddington Bear Toast!
And there you have it! A delightful, edible Paddington Bear ready to brighten any morning or afternoon. The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
