Key Ingredients for Your Red, White, & Blue Slushie
Crafting this festive drink requires just a few key ingredients, each playing a crucial role in both flavor and color. For precise measurements and step-by-step instructions, you can find the printable recipe card at the end of this post. However, let’s dive into what makes each component so important.

Ingredient Spotlight & Smart Substitutions
The Red Layer: Raspberry Infusion
- Ice: Essential for that perfect slushie consistency. Using finely crushed ice can help achieve a smoother blend.
- Frozen Raspberries: These are the heroes of your red layer, providing a beautiful color and tangy-sweet flavor. Using frozen berries helps keep the slushie thick and cold.
- Tip for Smoothness: Raspberries are notorious for their tiny seeds. For an extra-smooth slushie, you can first pulverize the frozen raspberries in a food processor, then strain out the seeds using a fine-mesh sieve. Use the seedless pulp in your blender.
- Substitutions: If raspberries aren’t available or you prefer other flavors, frozen strawberries are an excellent alternative. For a quick and easy option that still provides the red color, a splash of grenadine (non-alcoholic) or raspberry syrup can also work, though it won’t add the same fruit texture.
- Lemonade: Provides a refreshing tart base that complements the berries beautifully.
- Vodka: The spirit of choice for its neutral profile, allowing the fruit and citrus flavors to shine without overpowering them. Any good quality plain vodka will do.
The White Layer: Classic Lemonade Zing
- Ice: Again, crucial for the frosty texture.
- Lemonade: This layer relies solely on lemonade for its flavor and white (or slightly opaque) color.
- Substitution/Enhancement: For an even more intense lemonade flavor, consider using a lemonade concentrate. Simply substitute it at a 1:1 ratio with regular lemonade, but ensure it’s slightly thawed before blending for optimal results. You can also experiment with different brands of lemonade to find your favorite balance of sweet and tart.
- Vodka: Keeps this layer boozy and cohesive with the other layers.
The Blue Layer: Exotic Citrus Twist
- Ice: The foundation for your icy blue blend.
- Lemonade: Balances the bold flavor of the blue curacao.
- Blue Curacao: This is the star ingredient for achieving that dazzling electric blue hue! Blue curacao is an orange-flavored liqueur, similar to Triple Sec but with a touch more zest and a distinct citrus bite. Its flavor profile perfectly complements the tangy lemonade and sweet raspberry, creating a harmonious and refreshing taste. You’ll find it in many iconic blue cocktails, like our Blue Lagoon Cocktail or Blue Hawaiian Mai Tai.

- Prepare Your Freezer Space: To ensure your slushie layers stay perfectly chilled and firm, make sure you have enough freezer space for at least 3 glasses or mason jars. This is crucial for maintaining distinct layers and achieving the best results.
- Blend the Red Layer:
In a sturdy blender, combine 1 ½ cups of ice, 1 cup of frozen raspberries, ½ cup lemonade, and 2 ounces of vodka. Pulse the mixture repeatedly until it forms a thick, slush-like consistency. Be careful not to over-blend, as this can cause it to become too liquid. You may need to stop, open the blender, and use a tamper or spoon (with the blender OFF!) to push the ingredients down a few times to ensure an even blend. Once you’ve reached the desired thickness, pour this vibrant red mixture into a separate jar or glass and immediately place it in the freezer while you prepare the next layer.

Thoroughly wash your blender and rinse it with cold water to remove any residual red color. Add 2 ½ cups of ice, ¼ cup lemonade, and 2 ounces of vodka to the clean blender. Pulse until the ice is crushed and the mixture forms a smooth, thick slush. Pour this white layer into another container and place it in the freezer alongside the red layer to keep it frosty.

Wash your blender one more time, rinsing well with cold water. Add 3 cups of ice, ¼ cup lemonade, and 1 ½ ounces of blue curacao. Pulse until the ice is completely crushed and the mixture is a bright, uniform blue slush. This layer adds a fantastic citrus note along with its striking color.

Now for the exciting part – assembly! Retrieve your chilled glasses or jars from the freezer. We recommend using Poco Grande glasses, also known as hurricane glasses, which are traditionally used for Pina Coladas and have a beautiful wide bowl perfect for showcasing layers. Starting with the red layer, carefully spoon an equal amount into the bottom of each of your 3 glasses. Gently follow with the white layer, spooning it on top of the red. Finish by spooning the blue layer on top of the white. Serve immediately to enjoy the crisp, distinct layers before they start to blend.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Success
Absolutely! This is one of the best tips for stress-free entertaining. You can prepare each individual red, white, and blue layer ahead of time. Blend them according to the instructions, then store each color separately in airtight containers or freezer-safe jars in the freezer. When you’re ready to serve, simply take them out, give them a quick stir if they’ve become too solid, and spoon them into your glasses. This method is especially useful if you live in a warm climate where drinks melt quickly, or if you’re hosting a large crowd and want to prepare a double batch without blending and cleaning up during the party.
Yes, you certainly can! To make a delightful non-alcoholic version, simply omit the vodka from the red and white layers. For the blue layer, you can substitute the blue curacao with a non-alcoholic blue-colored drink. Great options include Powerade Zero Mixed Berry (which we used in our Patriotic Punch for a kid-friendly twist), or Hawaiian Punch Blue Lagoon for a similar flavor and vibrant color. You can also use a few drops of blue food coloring in lemonade for a simple color alternative.
To maintain those beautiful, distinct layers for as long as possible, several factors are key:
- Freeze Layers Thoroughly: Ensure each blended layer (red, white, blue) is very cold and firm before assembly. Storing them in the freezer for 15-30 minutes after blending helps significantly.
- Chilled Glasses: Always use glasses that have been pre-chilled in the freezer.
- Spoon Gently: When assembling, spoon each layer in carefully rather than pouring.
- Serve Immediately: This is a frozen drink, so it’s best enjoyed right after it’s made. The warmer the environment, the faster they will melt and blend.
The perfect slushie consistency is key. If your mixture is too watery, simply add more ice and pulse again until it thickens. If it’s too thick or chunky, add a tiny splash more of lemonade (or water for the non-alcoholic version) and pulse until it reaches the desired smooth, slushy texture. High-powered blenders usually achieve the best results, but even a standard blender can work with patience and occasional stirring.

Serving Suggestions & Creative Garnishes
These patriotic vodka lemonade slushies are designed to be the highlight of your summer festivities! They are, without a doubt, the perfect accompaniment for all patriotic holidays and backyard cookouts. To ensure the best experience, serve them immediately after assembling, while the layers are still distinct and the slushie is at its iciest.
Elevate your presentation with these garnish ideas:
- Fresh Berries: A few fresh raspberries or blueberries on top, or threaded onto a skewer, enhance both color and flavor.
- Citrus Wheels: A thin lemon wheel or wedge adds a zesty aroma and a touch of elegance.
- Maraschino Cherries: A classic pop of red and a touch of sweetness.
- Festive Straws: Red, white, and blue striped straws, or even star-spangled ones, add a playful and celebratory touch.
- Mint Sprig: For a refreshing aromatic contrast, a sprig of fresh mint makes a beautiful garnish.
If you’re serving these drinks outdoors on a particularly hot day, consider using insulated glasses to keep them colder for longer. You might also want to prepare extra ice on the side for anyone who prefers a thicker, icier consistency. Remember, the colder your ingredients and glasses are, the longer your beautiful layers will last!

- 1 ½ ounce blue curacao
Things You’ll Need
-
Blender
-
Jigger
-
3 Hurricane glasses 14-16 ounce glasses
Before You Begin
- Raspberries let out a decent number of seeds; if you wanted to take the extra step you can pulverize the raspberries in a food processor first, strain out of the seeds, and use the pulp within the recipe. You may also substitute with strawberries or simply use grenadine in this layer.
- You can swap the lemonade for a lemonade concentrate 1:1 for a stronger lemonade flavor but allow to thaw slightly before using.
- If making in a warm environment you may want to allow the individual layers to sit in a freezer until they get extremely cold before assembling.
Instructions
-
Prep enough freezer space for 3 glasses or mason jars to keep each layer cool, for best results.
Red Layer
-
In a blender add 1 ½ cups of ice, 1 cup of frozen raspberries, ½ cup lemonade and 2 ounces vodka. Pulse until thick, (ensure it does not start to break down into a liquid); you may need to open it and push it down a couple of times. Pour in a jar or glass and store in the freezer until ready to assemble.
White Layer
-
Wash the blender, and rinse with cold water prior to use. Pulse until crushed, 2 ½ cups of ice, ¼ cup lemonade, 2 ounces vodka, then pour into another container and place in the freezer.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
