Why These Easy Mummy Pops Are a Must-Make This Halloween

These Mummy Pops are truly a triumph of simplicity and charm, making them an absolute must-try for your Halloween celebrations. The magic begins with their foundation: rich Oreo truffles that are already a crowd-pleaser on their own. But when these velvety truffles are elevated onto a stick and transformed into cute little mummies, they become irresistible party treats.

One of the primary reasons this recipe stands out is the use of white chocolate melting wafers. Unlike regular white chocolate chips, melting wafers are specifically formulated to melt smoothly and harden quickly, which is a game-changer for dipping and decorating. This means less waiting around for your treats to set and more time enjoying your spooky creations. The rapid setting time ensures your mummy “bandages” and candy eyeballs adhere perfectly without any fuss, giving you professional-looking results with minimal effort. Plus, who wants to wait for delicious treats when you can start munching sooner?

While our original Halloween Oreo truffles are a fantastic standalone dessert, presenting them on a stick as Mummy Pops adds an extra layer of fun and convenience, especially for children or at bustling Halloween parties. They are individually portioned, easy to grab, and create a visually striking display that immediately gets everyone into the festive spirit. The combination of classic Oreo flavor with creamy goodness and a crisp chocolate shell makes for an unforgettable bite every time. This recipe streamlines the process, ensuring that even novice bakers can achieve spectacular results, making them an ideal project for a fun family baking session.

Ingredient Spotlight & Smart Substitutions

Understanding each ingredient’s role is key to mastering these Mummy Pops. Here’s a closer look, along with some helpful tips and substitution ideas:

OREOS – You will need 36 regular (not double stuffed) Oreo sandwich cookies. It’s crucial to include the cream filling, as it provides essential moisture that helps bind the truffle mixture together and contributes to its rich, smooth texture. While classic Oreos are recommended for their distinctive flavor and dark contrast under the white chocolate, feel free to get creative! Golden Oreos can offer a vanilla-based truffle, or experiment with seasonal flavors like Pumpkin Spice or Mint Oreos for a unique twist. If you don’t have a food processor, you can easily crush the Oreos by placing them in a large zip-top bag and crushing them with a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy glass until fine crumbs are achieved.

CREAM CHEESE – Softened cream cheese is non-negotiable for a perfectly smooth truffle base. Ensure your cream cheese is at room temperature before mixing; ideally, take it out of the refrigerator about 30-45 minutes beforehand and slice it into cubes to speed up the softening process. If the cream cheese is too cold, it won’t blend evenly with the Oreo crumbs, leading to an inconsistent texture with undesirable pockets of unmixed cream cheese. A fully softened block will incorporate seamlessly, creating a velvety, easy-to-handle “dough.”

WHITE CHOCOLATE COATING – For the best results, I highly recommend using white melting wafers (also known as candy melts or confectionery coating) for this recipe. These wafers are specifically engineered for easy melting and a quick, smooth set, making them ideal for dipping. Brands like Ghirardelli and Wilton are excellent choices, often found in the baking aisle of most grocery stores or craft shops. While white chocolate chips can be used in a pinch, they are generally more temperamental; they can be difficult to melt to a smooth, dippable consistency and are prone to scorching. If you must use chocolate chips, consider adding a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening per cup of chocolate to improve its meltability and fluidity. Melt slowly and gently, preferably using a double boiler or in short bursts in the microwave at a lower power setting, stirring frequently to prevent burning.

MINI CANDY EYEBALLS – These small, edible decorations are what truly bring your mummy pops to life, adding that quintessential spooky-cute Halloween touch. They are widely available in baking supply stores and often in regular grocery stores during the Halloween season. If you can’t find mini ones, slightly larger candy eyes will also work and can create a fun, exaggerated look. These are critical for the mummy’s character, so don’t skip them!

LOLLIPOP STICKS – While optional, lollipop sticks transform these delicious Oreo truffles into convenient and fun “pops.” They make handling and eating much easier, especially for kids, and also create a more impressive presentation. Standard 4-inch or 6-inch lollipop sticks work perfectly. If you prefer to serve them as traditional truffles, simply omit the sticks.

Crafting the Perfect Oreo Truffle Base

  1. Begin by placing the entire 36 Oreo sandwich cookies, cream filling and all, into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until the Oreos are pulverized into very fine, even crumbs. The finer the crumbs, the smoother your truffles will be. Ensure there are no large chunks remaining.blitzed Oreos in the bowl of a food processor, finely crushed
  2. Next, add the softened cream cheese to the food processor with the Oreo crumbs. Process again until the mixture is thoroughly combined and forms a thick, cohesive “dough.” You’ll know it’s ready when it starts clumping together and pulling away from the sides of the bowl. It might require stopping the processor, scraping down the sides with a spatula, and pulsing a few more times to achieve a uniform, smooth consistency.cubed cream cheese added to the food processor bowl with crumbled OreosOreo and cream cheese mixture perfectly combined in a food processor bowl, forming a thick dough
  3. Using a 1-tablespoon-sized scoop, portion out balls of the Oreo mixture. Place each ball onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Aim for consistent sizing to ensure even chilling and dipping later.Tablespoon scoop of Oreo truffle mixture held over a parchment lined baking sheet, ready to be dropped
  4. Transfer the baking sheet to the freezer and chill the Oreo balls for 10 minutes. This quick chill helps them firm up slightly, making them easier to roll. After 10 minutes, remove them and roll each ball between the palms of your hands to create a perfectly smooth, round shape. Return the shaped balls to the freezer for another 10 minutes to ensure they are firm enough for the next step. Keeping them consistently chilled is vital for preventing the chocolate coating from cracking later. hand holding a perfectly rolled Oreo truffle ball over a baking sheet
  5. In a small microwave-safe bowl, melt 2 ounces of the white melting wafers. Heat in short 15-20 second intervals, stirring well after each, until smooth. Dip one end of a lollipop stick into this melted chocolate, then immediately insert it halfway into the center of an Oreo truffle ball. The chocolate will act as a “glue” to secure the stick. Repeat for all balls. Return the pops to the freezer for approximately 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to set firmly, securing the sticks in place.A lollipop stick inserted into the bottom of an Oreo truffle ball, secured with a dab of melted chocolate

Bringing Your Mummies to Life with White Chocolate & Candy Eyes

  1. Place the main portion, 14 ounces, of white melting wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second increments on medium power, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the wafers are completely melted and yield a silky, smooth consistency. Be careful not to overheat, as this can cause the chocolate to seize. If using a double boiler, melt over simmering water, ensuring the bowl does not touch the water.
  2. Working with one chilled mummy pop at a time, dip the firm Oreo ball into the melted white wafer coating. Gently turn and swirl the pop to ensure it’s completely enrobed in chocolate. Lift it out, then gently tap the stick against the edge of the bowl to allow any excess coating to drip off, ensuring a smooth finish. Place the coated ball back onto the parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Continue this process until all the mummy truffles are coated. For an elegant touch, consider using specific truffle or cake pop stands to hold the dipped pops upright while they set, preventing a flat back.

  3. Now for the “bandages” and eyes! Melt the remaining 4 ounces of white melting wafers using the same gentle heating method as before. Once melted and smooth, carefully transfer this candy into a small zip-top bag. Snip off a tiny corner of the bag with scissors (a very small snip will give you fine lines for bandages). Working quickly with one coated mummy pop at a time, drizzle the melted white candy across the truffle in a crisscross pattern, mimicking the look of mummy bandages. Immediately, while the chocolate drizzle is still wet, gently place two mini candy eyeballs onto the pop. The wet chocolate will secure the eyes in place.Drizzling melted white candy wafers over the top of white chocolate coated Oreo truffles to create mummy bandages, with candy eyes added
  4. Continue this decorating process for all remaining mummy pops until each one is transformed into an adorable, bandage-wrapped character with expressive eyes. Allow them to set completely at room temperature or in the refrigerator before serving.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Perfect Mummy Pops

Can I prepare these Mummy Pops in advance?

Absolutely! These mummy pops are fantastic make-ahead treats, perfect for busy party preparations. You can fully prepare them, including all the decorations, one or two days before your event. Simply store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator. For longer storage, you can freeze the “naked” Oreo truffles (before dipping in chocolate) for up to 3 months. When ready to dip, let them thaw slightly at room temperature for about 10-15 minutes to prevent chocolate cracking (see tip below) before proceeding with the coating and decorating steps.

What is the best way to store mummy pops?

To maintain their freshness and delightful texture, store your completed mummy pops in an airtight container. Keep this container in the refrigerator, where they will remain fresh and delicious for up to 2 weeks. For best flavor and texture, allow them to come to a slightly cooler room temperature for about 10-15 minutes before serving.

Why is my chocolate coating cracking on the mummy pops?

Chocolate cracking is a common issue that typically occurs due to a drastic temperature difference between your chilled truffle and the warm melted chocolate. If your Oreo truffles are too cold (e.g., straight from the deep freezer), the rapid temperature change upon dipping can cause the chocolate coating to contract and crack. To prevent this, always ensure your truffles have been allowed to sit at room temperature for about 10-15 minutes before dipping. This slight warming helps them acclimate. Remember, a few small cracks here and there aren’t a big concern, as the final “bandage” drizzle will cleverly cover most imperfections!

Do I have to use lollipop sticks for these treats?

Certainly not! While the sticks add to the “pop” experience and make them easy to handle, they are entirely optional. These treats were originally part of our Halloween Oreo Truffles recipe, where no sticks were used. If you prefer, simply shape the Oreo mixture into balls and coat them as usual, serving them as delightful, bite-sized truffles on a platter. They will be just as delicious and charming!

Author: Amanda Davis

Ingredients

  • 36 Oreo sandwich cookies regular stuffed, cream filling included
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened at room temperature
  • 20 ounces white melting wafers divided (2 oz for sticks, 14 oz for coating, 4 oz for bandages)
  • 52 small candy eyeballs
  • 26 lollipop sticks

Things You’ll Need

  • Food processor
  • 1 Tablespoon cookie scoop
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Before You Begin – Essential Tips

  • Cream Cheese Prep: Always ensure your cream cheese is completely softened to room temperature. This is crucial for achieving a smooth, clump-free truffle mixture. If it’s too cold, you’ll end up with unmixed pockets of cream cheese.
  • Timely Decoration: White candy melting wafers harden very quickly. It’s best to decorate your truffles one at a time immediately after dipping and drizzling. This ensures the candy eyes stick firmly to the wet chocolate “bandages.” If you find your chocolate has set before you can add the eyes, simply dab a tiny bit of freshly melted chocolate onto the back of each eyeball to use as glue.
  • Presentation Perfection: To prevent the back of your dipped pops from flattening, you can use specialized truffle or cake pop stands. These stands hold the pops upright while the chocolate sets, ensuring a perfectly round finish all around.
  • Avoid Cracking: Cracking in the chocolate coating usually occurs from temperature shock – when a very cold truffle meets warm melted chocolate. To minimize cracks, allow your Oreo truffles to sit at room temperature for about 10-15 minutes after removing them from the freezer, before dipping. A few minor cracks are perfectly fine, as the mummy bandage drizzle will cover most of them!

Instructions

To Make The Oreo Truffles

  • Place all 36 Oreo sandwich cookies (with their cream filling) into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse continuously until the cookies are completely pulverized into very fine crumbs.

  • Add the 8 ounces of softened cream cheese to the food processor. Process the mixture again until it is fully combined and begins to clump together, forming a thick, smooth “dough.” You may need to stop and scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.
    8 ounces cream cheese
  • Using a 1-tablespoon-sized scoop, portion out the Oreo truffle mixture into uniform balls. Place each ball onto a baking sheet that has been lined with parchment paper.
  • Chill the baking sheet with the truffle balls in the freezer for 10 minutes to firm the dough. After chilling, remove and roll each ball between your palms to achieve a perfectly smooth, round shape. Return the rolled balls to the freezer for another 10 minutes to ensure they are very firm.
  • Melt 2 ounces of the white melting wafers in a small, microwave-safe bowl (heat in short intervals, stirring well). Dip the end of a 26 lollipop stick into the melted chocolate, then insert it halfway into the center of an Oreo truffle ball. This chocolate acts as glue. Repeat for all truffle balls. Return the pops to the freezer for approximately 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to set and secure the sticks.

Decorating Your Mummy Pops

  • Place 14 ounces of white melting wafers in a microwave-safe bowl. Heat in 30-second increments on medium power, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until the wafers are completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat.
  • Working with one chilled mummy pop at a time, dip the entire firm truffle ball into the melted wafer coating, gently turning to coat it completely. Tap off any excess coating by gently tapping the stick against the edge of the bowl. Place the coated pop on a fresh parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Continue this until all the mummy truffles are coated.
  • Melt the remaining 4 ounces of white melting wafers using the same method. Transfer this melted candy to a small zip-top bag and snip off a tiny corner. Working with one mummy pop at a time, drizzle the white melted candy across the truffle in a crisscross pattern to resemble mummy bandages. Immediately place 2 small candy eyeballs onto the pop while the chocolate drizzle is still wet to secure them.

  • Continue decorating until all the mummy truffles are completed. Allow them to set completely before serving or storing.

Expert Tips & FAQs

  • Store your mummy pops in an air-tight container kept in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
  • Make Ahead – You can prepare the mummy pops fully, decorations included, a day or two in advance and store them in an air-tight container kept in the refrigerator. You can freeze the naked Oreo truffles (without the chocolate coating) in the freezer for up to 3 months.
  • Be sure to soften your cream cheese to room temp. This way, you won’t end up with clumps of cream cheese in your truffles.
  • Candy melting wafer coating hardens quite quickly, so I recommend decorating the truffles as you go so that the decorations stick. However, there is a fix if you happen to wait too long to add the mummy eyes; you can always add a tiny bit of melted candy on the back of each eyeball (as “glue”) and then place them on the truffles.
  • There are specific truffle or cake pop stands that you can place the dipped sticks on in order to avoid the back of the truffle being flat, if that’s your fancy.
  • Cracking typically happens when your Oreo truffles are too cold compared to the heat of the melted chocolate. If you leave your truffles in the freezer for too long before dipping them, it will more than likely cause the chocolate to crack. If you happen to do so, leave the truffles at room temperature for around 10-15 minutes before dipping to avoid cracks. A few cracks here and there isn’t a huge deal, as you’ll be covering most with the drizzle!
