Crispy & Healthy Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips: Your Ultimate Guilt-Free Snack
Craving a crunchy, satisfying snack but want to keep things healthy? Look no further than these incredible Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips! Forget the deep fryer and store-bought bags; this recipe delivers perfectly crisp, sweet, and salty chips that are a healthier alternative to traditional potato chips or greasy french fries. Packed with nutrients and flavor, these homemade crisps are a delightful treat you can enjoy without any guilt, making them an ideal choice for a wholesome snack or a lighter side dish.

Why These Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips are a Must-Try for Healthy Snacking
There’s something undeniably satisfying about a perfectly crisp chip, and these air fryer sweet potato chips hit all the right notes. They’re deliciously crunchy, boast that perfect balance of sweet and salty, and come with a significant nutritional boost – notably, a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, and dietary fiber. Unlike their greasy, deep-fried counterparts, making sweet potato chips in an air fryer drastically cuts down on the amount of oil needed, transforming a typically indulgent snack into a much healthier option. This makes them one of the best choices when you’re yearning for a potato chip experience but want to maintain a healthier lifestyle without sacrificing flavor or texture.
The magic of the air fryer lies in its convection cooking mechanism. It circulates superheated air around the sweet potato slices, essentially “frying” them with hot air. This process creates a remarkably crispy exterior that mimics traditional frying, but with significantly less fat. Not only does this method reduce calorie count, but it also enhances the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes, resulting in a snack that’s both deeply flavorful and wonderfully wholesome. This recipe is also incredibly adaptable, allowing you to customize seasonings to suit your palate – from savory and spicy to a subtly sweet cinnamon-dusted treat.

Ingredient Deep Dive & Smart Substitution Suggestions
Understanding each ingredient and its role is key to mastering this recipe. Here’s a closer look at what you’ll be using and how you can adapt it to your preferences.
Selecting the Perfect Sweet Potato
SWEET POTATO: The quality of your sweet potatoes significantly impacts the final taste and texture of your chips. When choosing sweet potatoes at your grocery store, always select firm, medium-sized potatoes. Look for smooth, unblemished skin with minimal bruises, cracks, or soft spots. The ideal sweet potato will feel heavy for its size and have a vibrant orange hue, indicating freshness and rich flavor. While any variety of sweet potato will work, the common orange-fleshed varieties (such as Beauregard or Jewel) offer a beautiful color and a naturally sweet taste that perfectly complements the salty seasonings. Avoid any potatoes with green areas or sprouts, as these indicate they are past their prime and may have a bitter taste.
Choosing the Right Oil for Crispness
OIL: A light coating of oil is crucial for achieving that desirable crispiness in the air fryer and for helping the seasonings adhere properly to the chips. We recommend using a neutral-flavored vegetable oil due to its high smoke point and mild taste, which won’t overpower the natural sweetness of the sweet potato. However, you have several excellent alternatives depending on your dietary preferences and what you have available. Other high-heat oils such as avocado oil, canola oil, or grapeseed oil are fantastic substitutes. Coconut oil can also be used, but be aware it might impart a slight tropical flavor. While olive oil can be used, extra virgin olive oil has a lower smoke point and a stronger flavor, so a light olive oil would be a more suitable choice to prevent burning and preserve flavor neutrality. The goal is to apply a very thin, even layer of oil to each slice to promote even browning and crisping without making the chips greasy.
Customizing with Seasonings
COARSE SALT & BLACK PEPPER: These are the foundational seasonings that truly bring out the best in sweet potatoes. The coarse salt adheres beautifully to the chips, providing that satisfying burst of salinity that contrasts wonderfully with the potatoes’ natural sweetness. Freshly ground black pepper adds a subtle, aromatic warmth. Feel free to adjust the amounts of both to your personal taste. For an enhanced flavor profile, consider experimenting with sea salt or pink Himalayan salt.
OPTIONAL SEASONINGS: This is where you can truly unleash your culinary creativity and personalize your air fryer sweet potato chips! A sprinkle of paprika can add a smoky depth and a beautiful reddish hue. Onion powder and garlic powder offer classic savory notes that are always a crowd-pleaser. If you enjoy a bit of heat, a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder can introduce a delightful kick. For a unique sweet and savory combination, try a very light dusting of cinnamon or a touch of brown sugar along with your salt. Dried herbs like rosemary or thyme can also add an earthy, aromatic twist. The possibilities are vast, so don’t hesitate to experiment and discover your favorite flavor combinations!

- Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Start by thoroughly washing your sweet potatoes under cool running water to remove any dirt or debris. Next, carefully peel the sweet potatoes using a vegetable peeler. Peeling typically ensures a smoother chip texture and a consistent look, though you can leave the skin on for added fiber and a more rustic appearance if you prefer (just ensure they are impeccably clean).
- Achieve Uniform Slices: This step is paramount for perfectly cooked, uniformly crispy chips. Using a mandoline slicer is highly recommended, as it allows you to slice the sweet potatoes to an incredibly thin and consistent thickness, ideally around 1/16th of an inch.
EXPERT TIP: Consistency is absolutely critical! If your sweet potato slices vary in thickness, the thinner pieces will crisp up and potentially burn long before the thicker ones are cooked through to that desired crunchy state. A mandoline ensures even cooking and consistent crunch across all your chips. If you don’t own a mandoline, use a very sharp chef’s knife and take your time to slice as thinly and evenly as humanly possible. Always prioritize safety when using sharp kitchen tools!
- The Starch Soak for Enhanced Crispiness: Once sliced, place all the thinly cut sweet potato rounds in a large bowl and cover them completely with cold water. Let them soak undisturbed for at least 20 minutes. This essential step helps to draw out and remove excess starch from the potatoes, which is vital for achieving that desirable crisp, non-soggy, and light texture. Without this step, your chips might turn out chewy or soft.
- Thoroughly Dry the Slices: After the soaking period, drain the water completely from the bowl. Spread the sweet potato slices out in a single layer on clean kitchen towels or several layers of paper towels. Now, pat them absolutely, unequivocally dry. Any residual moisture will cause the chips to steam rather than crisp in the air fryer, inevitably leading to limp, unsatisfactory results. This drying step cannot be rushed or skipped!
- Lightly Oil Each Slice: In a separate clean bowl, or on a clean surface, lightly brush the outside of each sweet potato slice with a very thin coating of vegetable oil. Alternatively, you can place the thoroughly dried slices in a large bowl, drizzle with the measured oil, and toss gently with your hands or tongs to ensure every surface is lightly coated. The key is a light and even layer to aid crisping without making them greasy.
- Season to Perfection: Sprinkle both sides of the lightly oiled sweet potato slices generously with coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper. If you’re using any of the optional spices (such as paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, or chili powder), add them now as well. Ensure an even distribution of seasonings across all slices for maximum flavor in every bite.
- Arrange in the Air Fryer Basket: Carefully place the seasoned sweet potato slices in a single layer on your air fryer’s wire rack or in its basket. It is absolutely crucial that the slices do not touch or overlap each other. Overcrowding the basket will severely impede proper hot air circulation, which is essential for crisping. This will lead to uneven cooking and steamed rather than crispy chips. You will almost certainly need to cook these in multiple small batches, depending on the size and capacity of your specific air fryer model.
- Air Fry to Golden Perfection: Preheat your air fryer to 250 degrees Fahrenheit (121 degrees Celsius). Once preheated, cook the sweet potato chips for 7-8 minutes. After the initial cooking time, carefully open the air fryer, use tongs to flip each chip over, and then continue to cook for another 7-8 minutes. Begin checking the chips at the 5-minute mark for each side, as air fryer models can vary widely, and the thickness of your slices will significantly impact the precise cooking time. The ultimate goal is a beautiful deep golden-brown color and a satisfyingly crisp texture. Be vigilant and watch them closely, as sweet potato chips can transition from perfectly crisp to slightly burnt very quickly due to their natural sugar content.
- Serve and Enjoy: Once golden, crispy, and cooked to your liking, promptly remove the sweet potato chips from the air fryer and serve them warm. They are absolutely at their best when enjoyed fresh, straight out of the appliance!
Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Perfect Sweet Potato Chips
Soaking the sweet potato slices in cold water is a vital preparatory step for achieving truly crispy chips. This process helps to draw out and remove excess starch from the potatoes. Starch, if left on the surface, can make the chips gummy or soggy during the cooking process. By reducing the starch content, you enable the chips to crisp up much more effectively and consistently in the air fryer. Remember, after soaking, it’s absolutely crucial to thoroughly dry the slices before applying oil and cooking. Any residual moisture will hinder the crisping process.
While many air fryer recipes utilize higher temperatures, we’ve discovered through extensive testing and experimentation that a lower cooking temperature of 250°F (121°C) works best for sweet potato chips. This method allows the chips to slowly dehydrate and crisp up without burning too quickly, which is a common problem with higher temperatures due to the natural sugars in sweet potatoes. Each air fryer model can operate slightly differently, so what achieves perfection in one might need a small adjustment in another. This lower temperature approach significantly minimizes the risk of burning and provides a more even, consistent crisp. You always have the flexibility to adjust the cooking time by a minute or two, either adding or subtracting, to achieve your personal preferred level of crispness. Always check the chips at the 5-minute mark on each side and flip them periodically to ensure even cooking. Keep in mind that the precise thickness of your slices will also significantly impact the required cooking time; thinner slices will cook faster, while thicker ones will naturally need more time to become fully crisp.
To preserve their delicious crispness, it is paramount that your air fryer sweet potato chips are completely cooled down to room temperature before you store them. Once fully cooled, transfer them to a sealed ziptop bag, a mason jar with a tight-fitting lid, or any other airtight container. Stored properly at room temperature, these chips can maintain their freshness and crunchy texture for up to 2 weeks. It’s generally advisable to avoid refrigerating them, as the moisture and humidity within the fridge can cause them to soften and lose their desired crispiness much faster.
For optimal crispiness and thorough, even cooking, it’s absolutely essential to cook the sweet potato chips in a single, non-overlapping layer in your air fryer basket or on the wire rack. Overlapping the slices will prevent the hot air from circulating properly around each individual chip. This inevitably leads to uneven cooking, resulting in some chips remaining soft and soggy while others might burn. While it might require a bit more time and patience, cooking in multiple smaller batches ensures that every single chip achieves that perfect golden, airy, and crispy texture you’re looking for. Patience is indeed a virtue when aiming for air fryer perfection!
Beyond the classic salt and pepper, sweet potato chips are incredibly versatile and welcome a variety of flavor profiles! For a delightful sweeter twist, try a light sprinkle of cinnamon sugar (a mixture of 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon with 1 tablespoon granulated sugar). For a savory and slightly smoky kick, combine garlic powder, onion powder, and a dash of smoked paprika. If you enjoy a bit of heat, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder. A sprinkle of dried rosemary or thyme can also infuse them with a wonderful earthy aroma. Don’t be afraid to experiment with your favorite spice blends to find your perfect flavor combination!
There are a few common culprits for soggy or less-than-crispy air fryer chips. First, ensure your slices are uniformly thin – thick slices simply won’t crisp properly in the given time. Second, the soaking and, most importantly, the thoroughly drying steps are non-negotiable; any excess starch or moisture will prevent the chips from becoming truly crispy. Third, never overcrowd the air fryer basket; cook in single layers to allow for optimal hot air circulation. Finally, air fryer models vary significantly, so you might need to slightly adjust the cooking time or temperature based on your specific appliance. Don’t be afraid to add a few extra minutes, checking frequently, until they reach your desired level of crispness and golden color.

Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes peeled and sliced
- 1 Tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp coarse salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Optional Seasonings
- paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder
Things You’ll Need
-
Air fryer
-
Mandolin
Before You Begin
- You can swap out the vegetable oil with another high-heat oil like avocado, canola, or grapeseed oil.
- Please note that the thickness of your slices will alter the time needed for them to crisp up. The thinner the slice, the less time they need, and the thicker they are, the longer they will need.
- Through experimenting, this low-heat method worked the best with the least amount of burning. Keep in mind that each air fryer works a little differently. You can always add more cooking time or use less time to get your perfect chip. Make sure to flip over periodically at 7-8 minutes.
Instructions
-
Wash and peel the sweet potatoes.
-
Using a mandolin slicer slice the sweet potatoes on a thin setting. Make sure that the slices have an even thickness on each slice. If the slices are too thin on one side that side will burn before the thicker side cooks.
-
Soak all of the slices in a large bowl covered with cold water for 20 minutes. This removes some of the starch for a crisper chip.
-
Thoroughly dry the slices with a towel or paper towels.
-
Lightly brush the outside of each slice with a light coating of the vegetable oil.
-
Sprinkle the salt and pepper or other optional spices onto each side of the slices.
-
Place on the air fryer wire rack or basket and make sure that the slices are not touching each other.
-
Cook for 7-8 minutes at 250 degrees Fahrenheit and then flip over each chip and cook for another 7-8 minutes. Check at the 5-minute mark for each side to make sure they do not overcook and burn. Remove and serve.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
