Why Baking Bacon in the Oven is a Game Changer

Once you experience the simplicity and superior results of cooking bacon in the oven, there’s truly no turning back. This method stands out for several compelling reasons, transforming bacon preparation from a tedious chore into a hands-off delight. Much like using an air fryer for smaller batches, the oven method offers unparalleled ease, but with the added benefit of accommodating larger quantities, making it perfect for family breakfasts, brunches, or meal prepping.

The primary advantage of baking bacon over sizzling it in an open pan on the stovetop is significantly reduced mess and effort. Forget about grease splattering all over your countertop, stovetop, and even your clothes. With the oven method, all the rendered fat is contained within the baking sheet. Simply line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper, lay out your bacon strips, and let the oven do all the work. Once cooked, you can easily transfer the bacon to paper towels to drain, then simply wrap up the foil with the greasy remains and toss it straight into the garbage. Cleanup becomes a breeze, saving you precious time and effort.

Beyond the mess-free aspect, oven-baked bacon consistently delivers a superior texture. The circulating heat in the oven cooks the bacon evenly from all sides, resulting in perfectly crisp strips every time, without the need for constant flipping. This hands-off approach frees you to focus on preparing other parts of your meal, making breakfast preparation much more efficient. Whether you prefer your bacon just slightly crispy or extra-crunchy, the oven allows for precise control, yielding delicious results tailored to your preference.

Bacon & Seasoning Choices: Tailor Your Flavor

While the basic recipe is straightforward, there’s plenty of room to customize your oven bacon to suit your taste preferences. The type of bacon and any optional seasonings you choose can significantly impact the final flavor and texture.

  • BACON – The most important ingredient, of course! When it comes to selecting the best bacon for oven baking, the answer is simple: use your favorite kind. We typically use classic-cut bacon for a balanced crispiness. However, thick-cut bacon works wonderfully too, though it will require a slightly longer baking time to achieve the desired crispness. If you prefer a chewier texture, thick-cut might be your go-to. Conversely, thinner-cut bacon will cook faster and become extra-crispy, so keep a closer eye on it. Experiment with different varieties like applewood smoked, hickory smoked, or even uncured bacon to find your perfect match.
  • TURKEY BACON – For a lighter option, turkey bacon can certainly be used. It’s important to remember that turkey bacon has a much lower fat content, which means it will cook significantly faster than pork bacon. When baking turkey bacon, start checking for doneness around the 7-8 minute mark to prevent overcooking, as it can dry out quickly.
  • SEASONING – While bacon is delicious on its own, adding seasoning is a fantastic way to elevate its flavor profile, and it’s completely optional! We love experimenting with different flavors to add a unique twist. Some of our favorites include Montreal Steak Seasoning for a robust, peppery kick, or a bourbon smokehouse flavored seasoning for a rich, smoky sweetness. You can also keep it simple with a sprinkle of freshly ground black pepper, a touch of brown sugar for candied bacon, a pinch of cayenne for a subtle heat, or even a drizzle of maple syrup for a sweet and savory experience. Don’t be afraid to play around with different spices and blends to discover your signature oven bacon flavor. If you prefer the pure, unadulterated taste of bacon, feel free to omit any additional seasonings altogether.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Cook Bacon in the Oven

These step-by-step photos and detailed instructions are provided to help you visualize each stage of making this easy oven bacon recipe. For a convenient printable version of the full recipe, complete with precise measurements and instructions, you can Jump to Recipe at the bottom of this post.

  1. Preheat Your Oven & Prepare Your Pan: Begin by preheating your oven to a consistent 400°F (200°C). This ensures the bacon cooks evenly from the moment it enters the oven. While the oven preheats, prepare your baking sheet. Line a standard baking sheet with aluminum foil. This is crucial for easy cleanup, as the foil will catch all the rendered bacon grease. For even crispier results, you can place an oven-safe wire rack over the foil-lined baking sheet. This allows air to circulate around all sides of the bacon and helps the grease drain away, preventing the bacon from frying in its own fat.
  2. Arrange the Bacon: Carefully lay the bacon strips on the prepared baking sheet in a single layer. Ensure that the slices are not touching or overlapping each other. Crowding the pan will cause the bacon to steam instead of crisp, leading to unevenly cooked and less desirable results. Leave a small space between each strip to allow for optimal air circulation and even cooking.
  3. Optional Seasoning: If you enjoy flavored bacon, now is the time to add your chosen seasoning. Lightly sprinkle your desired seasoning, such as Montreal Steak Seasoning, brown sugar, or black pepper, evenly over the bacon strips. Remember, this step is entirely optional; plain oven bacon is incredibly delicious on its own.

  4. Bake to Perfection: Place the baking sheet with the bacon into the preheated oven. Cook for approximately 10-15 minutes. The precise cooking time will vary based on several factors, including the thickness of your bacon slices and the calibration of your individual oven. Thin-cut bacon may be ready in 10-12 minutes, while thick-cut bacon could take up to 18-20 minutes. Begin checking the bacon around the 10-minute mark. Look for visual cues: the bacon should be golden brown and appear crispy to your liking. Keep a close eye on it, especially towards the end, as bacon can go from perfectly cooked to burnt very quickly.

  5. Drain and Serve: Once the bacon has reached your desired level of crispiness, carefully remove the baking sheet from the oven. Using tongs, transfer the cooked bacon strips to a plate lined with several layers of paper towels. This will help absorb any excess grease, making the bacon even crispier and less oily. Allow the bacon to sit for a minute or two on the paper towels; it will continue to crisp up as it cools.

Frequently Asked Questions & Expert Tips for Perfect Bacon

Can I use turkey bacon with this method?

Yes, absolutely! You can certainly use turkey bacon for this recipe. However, it’s crucial to remember that turkey bacon has a significantly lower fat content compared to pork bacon, which means it will cook much quicker. Start checking on it in the oven around the 7-8 minute mark to prevent it from drying out. Adjust cooking time as needed until it reaches your desired crispiness.

How do I store leftover oven bacon?

To store leftover cooked bacon, allow it to cool completely to room temperature. Then, place it in an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Cooked bacon can also be frozen for up to 1-2 months; wrap it tightly in foil or plastic wrap before placing it in a freezer-safe bag.

Should I use a wire rack for baking bacon?

While not strictly necessary, using a wire rack placed over your foil-lined baking sheet is an expert tip for achieving maximum crispiness. The rack elevates the bacon, allowing air to circulate around all sides and letting the rendered fat drip away. This prevents the bacon from cooking in its own grease, leading to a much crispier result. If you prefer slightly chewier bacon, or don’t have a rack, simply bake it directly on the foil.

Can I use parchment paper instead of aluminum foil?

Yes, parchment paper is an excellent alternative to aluminum foil for lining your baking sheet. It’s non-stick and makes cleanup just as easy. Both foil and parchment paper work well to contain the grease and protect your baking sheet.

What’s the best temperature for crispy oven bacon?

A consistent temperature of 400°F (200°C) is ideal for achieving perfectly crispy bacon in the oven. This temperature is hot enough to render the fat and crisp the meat without burning it too quickly, especially if you’re keeping a close eye on it.

Do I need to flip the bacon while it’s baking?

No, one of the greatest advantages of baking bacon in the oven is that it’s a hands-off process. You do not need to flip the bacon. The circulating heat in the oven cooks both sides evenly, resulting in consistently crispy strips without any intervention.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
