ingredients for air fryer french fries
  • Potatoes: We highly recommend using Yukon gold potatoes for their creamy texture and slightly sweet flavor, which perfectly complements the crispiness achieved in the air fryer. They yield a fry that’s soft on the inside yet wonderfully crunchy. Russet potatoes are another excellent choice, as they are famously known for their high starch content, which produces a more classic, fluffy-on-the-inside, crispy-on-the-outside french fry taste. While these two are our top picks, feel free to experiment with other varieties like red potatoes for a different flavor profile, keeping in mind that the cooking time and texture might vary slightly. When selecting potatoes, choose firm, blemish-free ones for the best results.
  • Olive Oil: Just a small amount of olive oil is needed to help the fries achieve their golden crispness and to ensure the seasonings adhere properly. Extra virgin olive oil imparts a lovely flavor, but you can also use other high-smoke-point oils like avocado oil or grapeseed oil if preferred. The key is a light, even coating.
  • Salt & Pepper: A simple combination of salt and freshly ground black pepper is all you need to bring out the natural deliciousness of the potatoes. Adjust to your taste preferences.

Optional Enhancements:

  • Garlic Powder & Onion Powder: For an extra layer of savory flavor.
  • Paprika or Chili Powder: Add a hint of smokiness or a gentle kick.
  • Fresh Parsley & Grated Parmesan: Perfect for garnishing freshly cooked fries.
  • Your Favorite Dipping Sauce: Ketchup is a classic, but don’t hesitate to explore options like a creamy aioli, sriracha mayo, or a tangy BBQ sauce.

  1. Prepare and Soak the Potatoes: Begin by thoroughly cleaning your potatoes under cold water, scrubbing them gently with a soft brush to remove any dirt. Once clean, slice the potatoes into uniform ¼ inch thick sticks. Uniformity is key here for even cooking, so try to make them as consistent as possible. Transfer the cut potato slices to a large bowl and submerge them completely in cold water. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes. This crucial step helps draw out excess starch, which is essential for achieving that desirable crispy texture.

  2. Dry Thoroughly: After soaking, drain the potato slices completely. Spread them out in a single layer on a clean paper towel-lined surface or a clean kitchen towel. Pat them thoroughly dry and allow them to air dry for another 30 minutes. This step is critically important; any residual moisture will steam the fries instead of crisping them. Ensure the potato sticks are as dry as possible before moving on.

  3. Season and Preheat: In a large bowl, drizzle the dried potato sticks with olive oil, then sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Toss them thoroughly to ensure every fry is lightly and evenly coated. Meanwhile, preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Once preheated, carefully add the seasoned fries to the air fryer basket. It’s important to cook in multiple batches if necessary, ensuring the fries are in a single layer without overcrowding. Overcrowding will prevent proper air circulation, leading to steamed, rather than crispy, fries.

  4. Air Fry to Perfection: Air fry the potatoes at 375°F (190°C) for 13 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through to ensure even cooking and browning. After 13 minutes, increase the heat to 400°F (200°C) and continue air frying for an additional 3 minutes. This two-stage cooking process helps cook the potatoes through at a lower temperature, then crisps them beautifully at a higher temperature. Keep an eye on them during the last few minutes to prevent over-browning, as air fryer models can vary in cooking power.

  5. Serve and Enjoy: Once golden and crispy, remove the fries from the air fryer. For an extra touch of flavor and visual appeal, sprinkle them with fresh chopped parsley and a dusting of grated Parmesan cheese while still hot. Serve immediately with a side of ketchup, your favorite homemade french fry sauce, or any dipping sauce you desire. Enjoy your perfectly crispy, homemade air fryer french fries!

Tips for Achieving the Ultimate Crispy Air Fryer French Fries

While the recipe above provides a solid foundation, these additional tips will help you guarantee restaurant-quality crispness every single time:

  • Don’t Skip the Soak: Soaking the potatoes is non-negotiable for superior crispness. It removes surface starch, preventing the fries from sticking together and promoting a crispier exterior.
  • Dry, Dry, Dry: This cannot be stressed enough. Any moisture on the potatoes will turn them soggy instead of crispy. Use paper towels or a clean kitchen towel to pat them very dry, then allow them to air dry for an additional period. A salad spinner can also help remove excess water.
  • Uniform Cuts: Consistency in your potato cuts ensures that all fries cook evenly. If some are thicker than others, you’ll end up with a mix of undercooked and overcooked pieces.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Basket: Air circulation is the air fryer’s superpower. Overfilling the basket restricts this airflow, leading to steamed fries rather than fried ones. Cook in batches if necessary, allowing enough space for air to circulate freely around each fry.
  • Shake the Basket: Make sure to shake the air fryer basket at least once, or even twice, during cooking. This prevents sticking and promotes even browning and crisping on all sides.
  • Light Oil Coating: A thin, even coat of oil is sufficient. Too much oil can make the fries greasy and less crispy. A spray bottle can help achieve an even application.
  • Two-Stage Cooking: The initial lower temperature cooks the potato through, while the final higher temperature crisps the exterior. This technique is key to achieving that perfect texture contrast.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer French Fries

What kind of potatoes can I use for air fryer french fries?

For the best air fryer french fries, we highly recommend using Yukon gold potatoes or russet potatoes. Yukon golds are known for producing a fry that is soft and creamy on the inside with a delightful crunch on the outside. Russet potatoes, with their high starch content, are perfect for a classic, fluffy-interior, extra-crispy exterior type of fry, similar to what you’d find at a restaurant. Both varieties yield excellent results in the air fryer. While you can experiment with other types, keep in mind that their moisture and starch levels might affect the final texture and cooking time.

Do I have to peel the potatoes for this recipe?

No, you absolutely do not need to peel the potatoes for this recipe. Leaving the skin on your potatoes adds a rustic charm, contributes to a nice crunch, and provides additional nutrients and fiber. Many people prefer the natural look and texture of unpeeled fries. However, if you prefer your fries without the skin, feel free to peel them. Both methods work perfectly well, so it truly boils down to your personal preference for taste and appearance.

Why do I have to soak the potatoes before air frying?

Soaking the cut potatoes in cold water is a critical step for achieving truly crispy air fryer french fries. This process helps to draw out and remove excess surface starch from the potatoes. Starch can cause fries to stick together and become soft or gummy when cooked. By removing it, you allow the fries to crisp up much better and achieve that coveted golden-brown, crunchy exterior that we all love. Don’t skip this step for optimal results!

Can I use frozen french fries in the air fryer?

Yes, absolutely! The air fryer is excellent for cooking frozen french fries, often yielding crispier results than oven baking. Generally, you can follow the package instructions for oven baking, but reduce the cooking time slightly and make sure to shake the basket frequently. You’ll typically air fry frozen fries at around 380-400°F (195-200°C) for 10-20 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fries and your air fryer model. There’s no need to thaw them first or add extra oil, as they usually come pre-coated.

How do I store and reheat leftover air fryer french fries?

Air fryer french fries are best enjoyed fresh, as their crispness can diminish over time. However, if you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days. To reheat and bring back some of their crispiness, place them in a preheated air fryer at 350-375°F (175-190°C) for 3-5 minutes, shaking the basket halfway through. Avoid reheating in the microwave, as this will make them soggy.

Flavor Variations for Your Air Fryer Fries

While classic salt and pepper fries are always a winner, the beauty of homemade air fryer fries is how easily you can customize their flavor profile. Here are some delicious variations to try:

  • Garlic Parmesan Fries: After air frying, toss the hot fries with a tablespoon of melted butter, two minced garlic cloves (or 1/2 tsp garlic powder), and 2-3 tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. Finish with fresh parsley.
  • Spicy Cajun Fries: Add 1-2 teaspoons of your favorite Cajun seasoning blend along with the salt and pepper before air frying for a flavorful kick.
  • Smoky Paprika Fries: Incorporate a teaspoon of smoked paprika and a pinch of cayenne pepper into your seasoning mix for a warm, smoky depth.
  • Herbed Fries: Mix in dried herbs like rosemary, thyme, or oregano with your oil and seasonings before cooking. Fresh herbs can be added after cooking.
  • Sweet Potato Fries: While a separate recipe, you can adapt this method for sweet potatoes. Cut them into similar sticks, toss with a touch of oil, salt, and cinnamon or chili powder, then air fry until tender and crispy.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
