This recipe takes a simple vegetable and transforms it into a show-stopping dish with minimal effort. Here’s why these sweet and savory bundles of goodness deserve a permanent spot in your culinary repertoire:

The result is a symphony of sweet, salty, earthy, and warm notes that perfectly complement each other. The maple bacon adds an extra layer of sweetness and smoky depth that traditional bacon simply can’t match.
  • **Perfect Texture Contrast:** Experience the satisfying crunch of perfectly rendered bacon giving way to the tender, slightly caramelized sweetness of the carrot inside. The air fryer excels at achieving this ideal texture, ensuring the bacon is crispy without overcooking the vegetable.
  • **Air Fryer Efficiency:** The air fryer is the undisputed star of this recipe. It cooks these delightful bundles incredibly fast, typically in just 11 minutes, which is significantly quicker than oven roasting. The circulating hot air ensures every inch of the bacon gets delightfully crispy while the carrots cook evenly to a tender-crisp perfection. Plus, cleanup is a breeze as most of the bacon fat drips away into the air fryer basket.
  • **Incredibly Versatile:** These bacon wrapped carrots are wonderfully adaptable. They shine as an elegant appetizer for special occasions or holiday gatherings, but they’re equally fantastic as a quick and flavorful side dish for any weeknight meal. ingredients needed for air fryer bacon wrapped carrots

BACON: We highly recommend using sweet and smoky maple bacon for this recipe, as its inherent sweetness beautifully complements the spices and carrots. However, feel free to use your preferred type of bacon. Standard or regular cut bacon works exceptionally well, producing a wonderfully crisp exterior. If you opt for thick-cut bacon, be aware it may require a few extra minutes in the air fryer to achieve optimal crispiness. For a lighter option, turkey or chicken bacon can be used, but remember they typically cook faster and have less fat, so keep a closer eye on them to prevent overcooking.

CARROTS: Fresh, firm carrot sticks are essential for the best texture and flavor. When selecting your carrots, consider their size and shape. You’ll want them to fit comfortably in your air fryer basket once wrapped in bacon. If your carrots are very long, it’s advisable to trim the ends to size before wrapping. Uniformity in size will also help ensure they cook evenly. While baby carrots can be used, they might cook quicker and have a slightly different texture; larger, thicker carrots tend to hold up better and offer a more satisfying bite.

BROWN SUGAR: Provides that delightful caramelized sweetness that makes these carrots irresistible.

SALT: Balances the sweetness and enhances all the other flavors.

NUTMEG: Adds a warm, aromatic spice note that pairs wonderfully with carrots and maple flavors.

DRIED THYME: Contributes a subtle, earthy, and savory herb flavor that elevates the overall profile of the dish.

PAM OR OLIVE OIL COOKING SPRAY: Essential for preventing the bacon and carrots from sticking to the air fryer grate, ensuring easy removal and perfect crispiness.

How to Make Irresistibly Easy Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Carrots

These step-by-step photos and instructions are here to help you visualize how to make this recipe. For the complete printable version, with precise measurements and instructions, simply Jump to Recipe at the bottom of this post.

  1. **Prepare the Carrots:** Begin by peeling and thoroughly washing your carrots. You have the option to leave the green ends on for a rustic look or trim them off for a cleaner presentation. Before you start wrapping, it’s a good idea to quickly check if the full length of your carrots will fit into your air fryer basket. If they are too long, simply trim the ends to ensure a proper fit. Once trimmed, use a paper towel to dry the carrots completely. This crucial step helps the bacon adhere better and promotes crispiness, preventing the carrots from steaming.
  2. **Wrap with Bacon:** Take one piece of bacon and tightly wrap it around a single carrot, ensuring there are no loose ends. For the best results and to prevent the bacon from curling up during cooking, lay the wrapped carrots seam-side down on the air fryer grate. Make sure not to overcrowd the basket; arrange them in a single layer to allow for optimal air circulation, which is key to achieving crispy bacon.

  3. **Prepare the Spice Mixture:** In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar, salt, nutmeg, and dried thyme. Whisk them together until well blended. This fragrant mixture will infuse your bacon wrapped carrots with their signature sweet and savory flavor.

EXPER TIP: If you prefer a smoother, less textured topping, you can add ⅛ cup of olive oil to the spice mixture to create a brushable glaze. This ensures an even coating and a beautifully lacquered finish.

  4. **Air Fry & Season:** Place the bacon-wrapped carrots in your air fryer basket (remember, seam-side down!) and air fry them at 385°F (196°C) for a total of 11 minutes. After the first 6 minutes, carefully open the air fryer basket. At this point, the bacon will have started to crisp up and the carrots will be softening. This is the perfect time to generously sprinkle the carrots with your brown sugar mixture, or brush them if you opted for the oil-infused glaze. Applying the mixture midway prevents the sugar from burning prematurely and allows the flavors to melt into the bacon and carrots.

  5. **Finish Cooking:** Return the basket to the air fryer and continue cooking for the remaining 5 minutes, or until the bacon is perfectly crispy and the carrots are fork-tender. Cooking times can vary slightly depending on your air fryer model and the thickness of your bacon and carrots, so always keep an eye on them towards the end.

  6. **Serve and Enjoy:** Once cooked to perfection, transfer your golden-brown bacon wrapped carrots to a serving platter. If desired, garnish with a sprinkle of fresh thyme for an added touch of freshness and color. These make a truly delicious side dish or an impressive appetizer that disappears quickly!

Tips for Success and Delicious Variations

Achieving perfectly sweet and savory air fryer bacon wrapped carrots is simple with a few key tips and tricks. Plus, don’t hesitate to get creative with variations to suit your taste!

  • **Ensure Uniformity:** For even cooking, try to select carrots of similar size and thickness. If your carrots vary significantly, consider trimming larger ones to match smaller ones. This prevents some carrots from being overcooked while others are still firm.
  • **Don’t Overcrowd the Air Fryer:** Air circulation is paramount for crispy bacon. Cook the carrots in a single layer, ensuring there’s space between each one. If you’re making a larger batch, work in batches to guarantee optimal crispiness for every single carrot.
  • **Adjust for Bacon Thickness:** Regular-cut bacon works wonderfully and crisps up quickly. If you opt for thick-cut bacon, you might need to add an extra 2-4 minutes to the total cooking time, monitoring closely to prevent burning.
  • **Experiment with Spices:** While nutmeg and thyme provide a classic sweet and savory profile, feel free to get adventurous! A pinch of cinnamon can enhance the sweetness, while a tiny dash of cayenne pepper can add a subtle, intriguing kick. Garlic powder or onion powder can also deepen the savory notes.
  • **Consider a Finishing Glaze:** For an extra layer of sweetness and a beautiful sheen, you can prepare a simple glaze to brush on *after* the carrots are cooked. A mixture of a tablespoon of maple syrup or honey with a tiny bit of melted butter, brushed over the hot carrots, will create a delightful candy-like finish.
  • **Herb Power:** Fresh herbs can really brighten up this dish. Besides thyme, consider a sprinkle of fresh rosemary or sage, especially if serving with a holiday roast.
  • **Make it a Skewer:** For appetizer presentation, once cooked, you can carefully slide two smaller bacon-wrapped carrots onto a toothpick or small skewer.

Frequently Asked Questions About Air Fryer Bacon Wrapped Carrots

What kind of bacon can I use for this recipe?

Both standard (regular-cut) bacon and thick-cut bacon work well for this recipe, offering slightly different results. We typically prefer regular bacon as it cooks quickly to a beautiful, crisp shell with a satisfying crunch in the air fryer. If you choose thick-cut bacon, be prepared to extend the cooking time by a few minutes, as it renders fat more slowly and takes longer to crisp up. For a leaner alternative, turkey bacon or chicken bacon can be used, but they cook much faster due to lower fat content. When substituting, always keep a close eye on your carrots in the air fryer and adjust cooking times as needed to ensure they reach your desired level of doneness and crispiness.

Can I prepare bacon wrapped carrots ahead of time?

Yes, absolutely! While we don’t recommend precooking them, you can definitely prep these bacon wrapped carrots in advance. The best approach is to assemble them earlier in the day you plan to serve them. Simply wrap the carrots with bacon and then store them in an airtight container or wrapped snugly in aluminum foil in the refrigerator. This allows you to do the bulk of the work beforehand, so all you have to do when you’re ready to eat is toss them in the air fryer. This is particularly helpful when entertaining or preparing for holiday meals.

How do I store and reheat leftover bacon wrapped carrots?

These delicious carrots are definitely best enjoyed fresh and hot right out of the air fryer. However, if you happen to have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. To reheat and bring back that lovely crispness, we highly recommend using your air fryer again! Simply place the leftover carrots back into the air fryer basket and cook at 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes, usually 3-5 minutes, until they are thoroughly warmed through and the bacon has crisped up again. The microwave will warm them, but won’t restore the texture.

Can I use baby carrots instead of regular carrots?

Yes, you can certainly use baby carrots for this recipe. They are convenient as they don’t require peeling or trimming. However, keep in mind that baby carrots are generally smaller and more tender than regular carrot sticks, so they may cook a bit faster. You might want to reduce the air frying time slightly, perhaps checking for doneness after 8-9 minutes total. Adjust the amount of bacon per baby carrot as needed, possibly cutting bacon strips in half if the baby carrots are very small.

Can I bake these bacon wrapped carrots in a conventional oven?

Absolutely! If you don’t have an air fryer or prefer using your conventional oven, you can still enjoy this recipe. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Arrange the bacon wrapped carrots in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper or a wire rack set over a baking sheet (for better air circulation). Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the bacon is crispy and the carrots are tender. You’ll still want to apply the brown sugar mixture midway through cooking, around the 10-minute mark, just like with the air fryer method.

Ingredients

  • ½ lb maple bacon 6 strips
  • 6 carrots large
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme
  • PAM or olive oil cooking spray

Things You’ll Need

  • Air fryer

Before You Begin

  • This recipe can easily be doubled, but you will want to work in batches if so to ensure proper air circulation and crispiness.
  • You do not need to preheat your air fryer. Simply place the bacon-wrapped carrots in and then turn it on. The extra minute or so for the air fryer to warm up will not negatively impact the recipe.

Instructions

  • Peel and wash the carrots. You can leave the ends on or trim them off. Check to be sure the carrots fit into your air fryer before wrapping with bacon.
  • Dry the carrots with a paper towel.
  • Wrap one piece of bacon tightly around one carrot. Lay the carrots end-side down on the air fryer grate, to keep the bacon from curling up while cooking.
  • In a small bowl whisk together the brown sugar, salt, nutmeg, and dried thyme. For less of a texture top, you can add ⅛ cup of olive oil and make this a brushable topping.
  • Air Fry at 385F for 11 minutes. After 6 minutes, open and sprinkle the carrots with your brown sugar mixture – or brush if using the brushable version.
  • Bring back to the air fryer and continue to cook until finished. Top with fresh thyme if desired.

The recipes on this blog are tested with a conventional gas oven and gas stovetop. It’s important to note that some ovens, especially as they age, can cook and bake inconsistently. Using an inexpensive oven thermometer can assure you that your oven is truly heating to the proper temperature. If you use a toaster oven or countertop oven, please keep in mind that they may not distribute heat the same as a conventional full sized oven and you may need to adjust your cooking/baking times. In the case of recipes made with a pressure cooker, air fryer, slow cooker, or other appliance, a link to the appliances we use is listed within each respective recipe. For baking recipes where measurements are given by weight, please note that results may not be the same if cups are used instead, and we can’t guarantee success with that method.
